Two and a half miles on the old course at Cheltenham is a test of both speed and stamina. Position is important but even more so is not getting sucked into an overly quick early gallop that leaves you without enough reserves to get home.

Pressure begins from the off, with so many keen to get a prominent position, and that showed on Saturday in the Paddy Power Gold Cup when Coole Cody, the 2020 winner and a habitual front-runner, got a poor start and was left back in the field.
