It doesn’t take long for Gibraltar to stir up the sporting blood of its visitors.

Even on a calm day the approach by air feels like something of a gamble. And when the wind picks up, buffeting our plane on its precipitous descent, it provides a queasy reminder that all of life is 6-5 against.

“I reckon we’ll need three goes,” predicts one regular passenger as the aircraft judders low over the Mediterranean. The pilot calculates the odds aren’t tilted in our favour on this first attempt so we zip steeply upwards, almost grazing the plane's belly on the famous Rock.
