The lack of Flat racing in Britain last Sunday drew a few unfavourable comments, but the rare break helped the Newmarket sports day for stable staff, which was a roaring success.

With the jockeys' awards night unlikely to take place next year due to Good Friday racing, there are not many chances to stage events for racing's workforce with a fixture list bursting at the seams.

A total of 196 members of staff from 27 yards and studs around Newmarket jumped, ran and tugged at the chance to take part – 101 more than last year, when only five yards were involved – in a day hosted by The Racing Centre in partnership with the National Association of Stable Staff.
