Billions of dollars will be at stake next week when the United States Supreme Court begins a hearing that could lead to a huge expansion of legalised sports betting in the world's largest economy.

On Monday [December 4] the Supreme Court will begin hearing oral evidence as the state of New Jersey challenges the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA).

That 1992 law limits sports betting in the US to just four states – Delaware, Montana, Nevada and Oregon – although Nevada is the only state to allow bets on a single game.
