The proportion of UK punters who come into the official 'problem gamblers' classification has halved in the past year, while the numbers of those in the 'moderate risk' category have fallen by almost 42 per cent.

Those are the key takeaway figures from the latest statistics from the Gambling Commission, covering the year to September.

Data derived from a nationally representative sample of 4,005 people aged 16 and over showed that overall participation in any gambling activity, including the National Lottery, remained stable at 42 per cent.
