Go Conquer
Trainer Jonjo O’Neill
5th in the Ultima Handicap Chase, March 14
Stepped up in distance to 3m1f – the longest trip he has raced over – he jumped and travelled well and was a length up jumping the second-last. Having surrendered the lead on the approach to the final fence he then faded on the run-in when running out of petrol. On this evidence, he could improve for a drop back in distance or a switch to a sharper track, so he must go in the notebook for Aintree.

Apple’s Jade
Gordon Elliott
Won the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle, March 14
Ran the finish out of Limini and Vroum Vroum Mag with a gutsy display under a positive ride from Bryan Cooper. Her immediate future looks bright with Aintree on the horizon as the flat and galloping Merseyside course is tailor-made for her. The Racing Post Rating of 162 she registered when landing the 4-y-o Anniversary Hurdle at the Grand National meeting last season remains her career-best figure and she could be aimed at the 2m4f Betway Aintree Hurdle.

Last Goodbye
Elizabeth Doyle
5th in the Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase, March 14
This novice chaser was beaten only eight and a quarter lengths at the finish, but you could argue the ground he lost when caught up in several incidents cost him at least that much. He was hampered at the eighth, denied a clear run turning for home and was badly impeded on the landing side of the second-last. When eventually in the clear he stayed on well on the run-in and should soon be taking advantage of what seems a fair chase mark.
