Perhaps it's the fact that the first of his Gold Cup wins was 90 years ago; maybe it's that the Cheltenham Festival wasn't quite so much of a festival in those days and the Gold Cup wasn't quite such a big deal; it's equally possible that Arkle had something to do with it. But whatever the reason, Golden Miller doesn't quite seem to get the credit he deserves.
All of which is a shame, given that the great horse came to the table with not only the talent to land five Gold Cups (in successive years) and a Grand National but also an owner whose eccentricity and outspokenness would have made her a social media sensation in the modern age.
Dorothy Paget was the daughter of a substantially wealthy Anglo-American family, and while her very large inheritance at the age of 21 gave her the wherewithal to become one of the leading racehorse owners of her time, it also helped turn her into a distrustful, inconsiderate and often very rude one, as many of her trainers would testify.
