Another chapter in Buckfastleigh’s long and varied history will be written on Sunday when it opens the British point-to-point season.

The Devon track, close by the A38 between Exeter and Plymouth – entry is £10 for adults and under 16s enter free – stages a meeting that heralds the start of a nationwide sport, one that is amateur in name, but closely tied to racing under rules. It is a cross-over that has never been more relevant, with increasing numbers gaining experience in point-to-pointing before becoming licensed trainers and jockeys.

Yet for every Sean Bowen, Bryony Frost or Colin Tizzard – who all gained vital experience in the point-to-point field – there are countless more who take part for the love of it, and who are happy at that level. If they come upon a good horse, or can win a title or award in one of the country’s 14 regions, so much the better.
