A new season approaches as old faces make their mark in the professional game
Another chapter in Buckfastleigh’s long and varied history will be written on Sunday when it opens the British point-to-point season.
The Devon track, close by the A38 between Exeter and Plymouth – entry is £10 for adults and under 16s enter free – stages a meeting that heralds the start of a nationwide sport, one that is amateur in name, but closely tied to racing under rules. It is a cross-over that has never been more relevant, with increasing numbers gaining experience in point-to-pointing before becoming licensed trainers and jockeys.
Yet for every Sean Bowen, Bryony Frost or Colin Tizzard – who all gained vital experience in the point-to-point field – there are countless more who take part for the love of it, and who are happy at that level. If they come upon a good horse, or can win a title or award in one of the country’s 14 regions, so much the better.
