A bit special: Donnacha O'Brien gives his verdict on Guineas hope Saxon Warrior

Donnacha O'Brien will bid to emulate his brother Joseph by partnering a Classic winner as a teenager in the 2,000 Guineas on Saturday and he has described his mount Saxon Warrior as "a bit special" before the Newmarket feature.

The elder sibling plundered a first Classic success aboard Roderic O'Connor in the 2011 Irish 2,000 Guineas when he was two days shy of his 18th birthday.

A year later the subsequent two-time champion jockey secured Newmarket's equivalent when guiding Camelot to a brilliant triumph before going on to Derby glory.

That prospect is not beyond the realm of possibility for the unbeaten Saxon Warrior, who, like Camelot, goes straight for the Guineas after winning the Racing Post Trophy in the autumn.

Both horses, of course, are or were trained by the brothers' father Aidan, and 19-year-old Donnacha, who partnered Saxon Warrior to the first of his three wins last year, says he cannot wait to partner the Doncaster hero again.

Speaking on Thursday, O'Brien, who has ridden in all the British Classics and finished fourth on Lancaster Bomber, his first 2,000 Guineas ride, a year ago, said about the general 5-1 chance: "I ride Saxon Warrior in all his work, so I know him quite well. He's in good form and I'm really looking forward to Saturday.

"I rode him when he made his debut at the Curragh in August. We didn't really know what we had as he hadn't been asked any questions before he went there.

"He was a bit slowly away but when I gave him a squeeze he came alive under me and took off, going away to win well. After that run we knew we had a very smart colt – one who was a bit special."

A month later Saxon Warrior went on to win the Group 2 Juddmonte Beresford Stakes at Naas, under Ryan Moore, before landing the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster in October.

While O'Brien has yet to enjoy Classic success, he has achieved two Group 1 victories in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. The first came aboard Intricately in 2016, trained by his brother Joseph, and the second on Happily – favourite for Sunday's Qipco 1,000 Guineas – for his father last year.
