Falmouth next for Laurens as star filly switches back to her own sex

Classic-winning filly Laurens will revert to taking on her own sex in next week's Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket following a below-par display at Royal Ascot.

A five-time Group 1 winner in fillies and mares' races, Laurens failed to build on the promise of her comeback second in the Lockinge when finishing sixth behind Lord Glitters in the Queen Anne Stakes.

Owner John Dance is hoping his pride and joy can transfer her form from Newmarket's Rowley Mile – where she has registered two of her biggest wins – to the July course on Friday week.

"PJ McDonald is coming in later in the week to do a bit of work with Laurens and it's all systems go for the Falmouth," said Dance. "It will be her first time on the July course but we have happy memories of Newmarket as she has won two Group 1s and finished second in the Guineas on the Rowley Mile."

Laurens' record

7-10 in races restricted to fillies and mares
0-3 in races against the colts and geldings

Dance admitted to feeling a little deflated after Laurens folded out of contention in the closing stages of the Queen Anne.

"I was a bit disappointed as she looked like she was travelling all over them, only to weaken fairly meekly in the last furlong and a half," he said.

"It might be Ascot just doesn't suit her and her prominent style of racing. She's a big, long-striding filly and it's possible those last two furlongs don't bring out the best in her."

Dance added: "She's not run a bad race and I could never be disappointed with her after what she's achieved.

"It's probably the first time we've been a bit more selfish about things but going to Royal Ascot with a chance like that was a once in a lifetime opportunity."
