Bob Baffert’s loss would have been Britain’s gain if a jovial exchange at the Breeders' Cup Classic media conference had been anything other than tongue-in-cheek.

The silver-haired, shades-wearing maestro was delighted to hear Juddmonte manager Garrett O'Rourke say Arrogate will stay in training in 2017 following his epic success over California Chrome at Santa Anita last weekend.

“Obviously, we will have to go back and run it by Prince Khalid, but I think the pointers are that he will definitely race next year,” said O'Rourke, prompting a big “Yesss!” from Baffert accompanied by a comic fist-pump. “Double yes,” echoed Mike Smith.
