Drying ground to blame with more than 60 non-runners across Thursday's cards

Thursday's cards in Britain have been hit with a spate of non-runners, with temperatures nudging past 30C ensuring quick ground at the three turf meetings.

The overnight going at Haydock has seen a significant change to good, good to firm in places (from good, good to soft in places) and as a result 28 non-runners had been declared by midday, with all bar five a result of the ground.

There are five non-runners apiece in the 6f handicap at 1.45 and the 1m2f handicap at 3.45 have reduced both fields to nine.

Thursday's cards

Haydock clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright said: "These are horses that were declared on good to soft ground and after the hot weather it isn't that any more. It is now good, good to firm in places and it's only going in one direction."

It is a similar story for Leicester's evening meeting, where the ground is good to firm, good in places (from good, good to firm in places overnight), with the non-runner count hitting 28, of which 25 are due to the ground.

With six non-runners, division one of the 1m2f maiden has felt the biggest impact with just six runners remaining.

Racing also returns to Bath on Thursday, where fast ground conditions are the norm.

However, the going changing to good to firm, firm in places (from good to firm, good in places overnight) means eight of the 11 non-runners on the card are due to the conditions.
