Gordon Elliott Gold Cup hope Delta Work to be aimed at Down Royal Champion Chase
Impressive Punchestown festival winner Delta Work will have his campaign geared towards a crack at the Magners Gold Cup at Cheltenham in March according to trainer Gordon Elliott, who revealed that the six-year-old would make his seasonal debut in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase over three miles at Down Royal on November 2.
Elliott won the Gold Cup with Don Cossack in 2016 and Delta Work, who has won four of his five chase starts, is a best-priced 14-1 for the Cheltenham Festival showpiece.
Three of Delta Work's victories last season came in Grade 1 contests and he suffered his sole defeat in the RSA Novices' Chase at Cheltenham when third to Topofthegame.
Elliott said: "Delta Work did great last season and his last run at Punchestown was probably his best.
"He's not the biggest or most robust horse we've ever had, but his form speaks for itself and we'll treat him like a genuine Gold Cup contender this season."
The trainer added: "He'll be entered in the Grade 1 Champion Chase and the Grade 2 for second-season novices at Down Royal, but it is safe to say the big one will be his main aim. He's done very well over the summer."
Elliott is set to unleash three of his big guns in the Grade 2 PWC Champion Chase at Gowran Park on Saturday, as he intends to let Shattered Love, The Storyteller and Jury Duty take each other on in the 2m4f contest.
"The intention is for all three to run," said Elliott. "They're all in good form and I'm keen to get them started. They're likely to improve for their first runs, but this looks a good starting point."
Felix Desjy could make his debut over fences in either the 2m2f beginners' chase at Gowran on Saturday or at Tipperary on Monday.
Elliott said of the Grade 1 Top Novices' Hurdle winner: "Felix Desjy has schooled very well over fences and we're looking forward to going chasing with him. He'll either run at Gowran Park on Saturday or at Tipperary on Monday."
Once again there are high hopes for Samcro this season and the 2018 Ballymore Novices' Hurdle winner will start his eagerly awaited chasing campaign at Down Royal on November 1.
"We haven't schooled him yet, but he ran in point-to-points so I've no doubt he'll be very good," said Elliott. "He'll run in the 2m4f beginners' chase at Down Royal."
Champion Bumper winner Envoi Allen and fellow Cheveley Park Stud-owned five-year-old Malone Road were unbeaten in bumpers last season and Elliott expects them to make their debuts over hurdles early next month.
Elliott said: "Envoi Allen and Malone Road are in very good form and the plan is to start them off in maiden hurdles in November. Malone Road had a setback last season but, touch wood, he seems to be back in great shape now."
