St Michel and Sweet Selection will be a mile ahead of the handicapper if making the cut in next month’s Betfred Cesarewitch after improved runs in the Doncaster Cup.

They finished third and fifth respectively behind Sheikhzayedroad, and as a result St Michel has been raised 13lb to 112, and Sweet Selection by 17lb to 104. However, neither is guaranteed to get in.

The October 8 marathon has a maximum field of 34 and three-year-old St Michel is languishing in 65th place in the pecking order, while the older Sweet Selection is 56th. Horses in the high 60s at the corresponding stage have made the cut in recent years, but in 2012 the last horse to get in was 45th.
