Dettori jumps at chance to ride Veracious in 1,000 Guineas

Frankie Dettori will take the ride on Sir Michael Stoute's Veracious in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas after partnering the daughter of Frankel in a strong gallop at Newmarket before racing on Wednesday.

Veracious won her maiden from Godolphin's subsequent dual scorer Winter Lightning at Newmarket in October, and Dettori said: "It's the first time I've ridden her and she gave me a good impression and is fit and well.

"She goes into the race an unknown quantity but it looks an open Guineas."

Veracious will be bidding to give Stoute and her owner-breeder Cheveley Park Stud another 1,000 Guineas 15 years after Russian Rhythm scored for the same connections.

Veracious was led in her 7f gallop by Kempton maiden winner Homeopathic (Ryan Moore), who was not asked to go with Veracious when Dettori tested his mount for stamina having won her maiden over 7f last year.

That was nearly two furlongs out and Veracious lengthened nicely to the line to finish well clear. Bookmakers Paddy Power cut her to 8-1 (from 10) for the Classic on May 6.

Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: “Veracious was already many people’s idea of the winner of the first fillies’ Classic and after the way she picked up so well in the gallop with Frankie, who will ride her in the big one, pushing her clear of her lead companion, we’ve been compelled to cut her.”

Stoute said: "Frankie was very happy with her. She is a nice filly who won her maiden here well. She is developing pleasingly and will run in the Guineas."

Earlier another 1,000 Guineas hopeful Wild Illusion (William Buick) galloped over the same 7f with stablemate Night Castle (James Doyle).

In a gentler piece of work Wild Illusion, who wintered in Dubai and looked gleaming in her coat, took the undulations in her stride.

Buick said: "That was perfect. She did very little – Charlie [Appleby] wanted to get her out of the yard and give her a look. She seems to have wintered well."

Coventry Stakes winner Rajasinghe completed the pre-racing action, galloping with stablemate Strategic Heights.

Michael Hills rode the Qipco 2,000 Guineas contender, who is owned by Phil Cunningham and trained by Richard Spencer.

He reported Rajasinghe, last seen finishing behind Mendelssohn in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on turf, needed time to get organised in his gallop but took off when hitting the rising ground to finish nicely clear of his stablemate.
