Robbie Power nominated for Sports Person Of The Year award

Irish Grand National and Gold Cup-winning rider Robbie Power will be bidding to add to his terrific haul in 2017 by becoming just the third jockey to win the RTE Sports Person Of The Year Award on Saturday.

The rider has described being nominated alongside All-Ireland winning hurler Joe Canning as well as world champion boxer Katie Taylor and other sports people as an honour, and has urged the racing community to row in behind him.

The award was first won in 1985 by boxer Barry McGuigan while Barry Geraghty won the prize in 2003 before Tony McCoy added his name to the trophy a decade later in 2013.

Power said: "It's an absolute honour to be nominated alongside so many brilliant sports people – the likes of Joe Canning and Katie Taylor to name a few.

"I've just been so lucky I've had a brilliant year and it's not often that racing is represented at these awards. Not only am I delighted for myself, but I'm delighted racing is represented."

Additional race at Dundalk

Horse Racing Ireland has responded to a request made by the Irish Racehorse Trainers Association by scheduling an additional race at Dundalk next Friday.

The race will be a two-year-old-only maiden run over five furlongs and entries will close by noon on Monday, December 18.

Chelmsford to race on Sunday

Chelmsford will stage an additional all-weather fixture on Sunday after the BHA moved to create an extra meeting in response to the spate of recent cancellations.

A total of eight fixtures were lost between Sunday and Wednesday because of issues associated with the cold snap.

Mike Waring, senior race planning executive at the BHA, said: "Given that the recent cold snap has led to a number of abandoned fixtures, we offered racecourses the opportunity to stage an additional fixture which will hopefully benefit owners, participants, punters and the horse population.

"We would like to thank Chelmsford City racecourse for agreeing to hold the fixture, and the Horserace Betting Levy Board for their continued support."

Entries will close at midday on Thursday, with declarations taking place at the normal 48-hour stage on Friday.

Derby yearling entries

A total of 338 yearling entries have been revealed for the 240th running of the Investec Derby at Epsom in 2019.

The Coolmore partners have 45 entries between them, headed by no fewer than 30 sons of Galileo, including full-brothers to Highland Reel, Churchill and Sir Isaac Newton, as well as a Frankel colt out of Belesta – the €1.6 million sale-topper at Goffs Orby.

The Aga Khan has 22 entries, Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum 21 and Khalid Abdullah 18.

Slevin to appeal five-day whip ban

JJ Slevin has lodged an appeal against the five-day suspension he received on Sunday after the Punchestown stewards deemed the rider used his whip with excessive frequency and force, and without giving his mount time to respond.

The stewards came to their conclusion after Slevin was beaten just a head aboard Flynsini in the 3m1f handicap chase.

The rider, who is based with Joseph O'Brien, has already equalled his career-best tally of 25 domestic winners, but has been in hot water before over his use of the whip.
