Timing is everything and the timing of an announcement of the deal between the Jockey Club and online gambling company Playtech is unhelpful to say the least.

The Jockey Club is not the first racing body or personality to get involved with Playtech's suite of casino games – Ascot, Frankie Dettori and Sir Anthony McCoy have gone before them.

However, those deals were not done during a government review of gambling legislation, a long-running process during which the sport has emphasised the differences between betting on sports – and horseracing in particular – and games of chance.
