Deadline for young racing fans' writing competition looms

Young racing fans with a passion for writing have until February 28 to enter the 25th and final Martin Wills awards.

The awards are for fine writing, either fact or fiction, on a horse racing theme by young people who fall under any of the four categories: under 26, under 18, under 15 and under 12 (as of September 1, 2016).

There is more than £3,000 in prizes to be won and winning articles will also be published in the Racing Post and The Irish Field.

Martin Wills was an amateur jockey and journalist who died in 1992, aged 39.

After 25 competitions, 2017 is the last year the awards will bear Martin Wills' name and the last to be organised by the Martin Wills Memorial Trust.

Brough Scott, chairman of the judges said: “This really is the last chance to win a prestigious Martin Wills Writing Award. Potential entrants have most of February – an eternity for many journalists – to create a winning idea and commit it to paper.”
