Dave Crosse out for the season after suffering schooling injury

Dave Crosse vowed on Sunday to make a full recovery after suffering another serious injury that has in effect ended his season just days after it started.

Crosse returned from a three-month layoff due to a fractured thumb only two weeks ago, but three rides into the campaign he sustained multiple breaks to his humerus after a fall while schooling.

"I'll be out again now for the foreseeable future," he said. "I rode at Worcester and went schooling for Henry Oliver and Alan Phillips the following morning.

"A mare I had done loads of schooling on for Alan jumped a hurdle about six times very well but when we went round the next time she never took off and fired me straight into the ground and I landed right on the point of my shoulder.

"I dislocated the shoulder and have multiple fractures in my humerus. I was in hospital for four days and it took 36 hours to see someone to put the shoulder back in at Worcester Hospital. I checked out today.

"I've been in touch with Geoff Graham, who is the best shoulder specialist in the country and hopefully he is going to operate on Tuesday or Wednesday."

Crosse, 35, had plenty to look forward to over jumps after riding 15 winners last season, his best campaign for 11 years, but he could be out for several months.

"I'll be working back from a year," he said. "It all depends how the surgery goes because it's in a fairly bad way. I was fairly depressed in the first 48 hours but I'm a positive person. The first doctor I saw said I wouldn't get back race-riding, but Geoff Graham said I would.

"I had a lot of good horses to look forward to so am gutted about that, but there's no point dwelling on that. I must focus on getting the surgery done and starting my recovery."
