Leopardstown hero Roaring Lion soars to head of Horse of the Year standings

Irish Champion Stakes winner Roaring Lion has leapt to the head of the Cartier Horse of the Year standings after his sublime success at Leopardstown last weekend.

The Qatar Racing-owned colt made it a third Group 1 win in a row when reeling in Saxon Warrior in the 1m2f contest and now stands at 174 points – 14 points more than Alpha Centauri (160). The Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine, who also heads the three-year-old filly standings, was retired on Sunday.

Roaring Lion now heads to Ascot for the Qipco Champion Stakes on October 20, where he could face stablemate and three-time Group 1 winner Cracksman (88).

Stradivarius, winner of the Stayers' £1 million bonus, has maintained a healthy lead (112) over Irish St Leger hero Flag Of Honour (56) in that category, with Gold Cup runner-up Vazirabad in third (55).

Poet's Word, who it was revealed on Tuesday misses the rest of the season, heads the older horse standings with 140 points ahead of recent Group 1 victor Recoletos on 104.

Following his half-length victory in the Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday, Havana Grey (48) sits alongside Royal Ascot hero Merchant Navy at the top of the sprinter standings with King George winner Battaash and Sprint Cup runner-up Brando.

Following a weekend of scintillating juvenile victories, Phoenix Stakes winner Advertise (56) maintains pole position in the two-year-old colt standings ahead of the unbeaten National Stakes hero Quorto (48).

Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Skitter Scatter (60) heads the two-year-old filly leaderboard ahead of Prix Morny heroine Pretty Pollyanna (48) and runner-up Signora Cabello (38).
