'Cup races would be the dream' - York aim for six-timer seeker Caius Chorister
When Caius Chorister won one race, David Menuisier was thrilled. But now the trainer has his eyes on York and a sixth straight win after her gutsy success at Goodwood.
The three-year-filly started life in handicaps off a lowly mark of 56, but after a pair of wide-margin successes at Epsom she arrived at Goodwood with a rating of 85, and won by a neck.
"We could never have anticipated she'd win more than one race and improve like she has," said Menuisier, who trains 15 miles from Goodwood at Pulborough.
"After Epsom people thought she was a front-runner, but she's not. She just wants to go at her own pace, so whether that's leading or at the back, it doesn't matter.
"She's very versatile and stays well. Goodwood was very special because once she took the lead and the other horse attacked her, she genuinely tried to win the race and Benoit [de la Sayette] wasn't hard on her either.
"She really improved for a mini-break in the spring. She's easy to get going because she has a light frame and I think that's why she might improve in future, as she's bound to get bigger and stronger.
"The target before Goodwood was the Melrose Handicap at the Ebor meeting; it seems like a good race for her on her first start over a mile and six furlongs. It's very good prize-money and it's where we'll be heading next.
"Cup races would be the dream really. She's heading there slowly because she will probably be 10lb off needing to run in those races. If she was to win the Melrose, she might be forced to go for black type."
Clive Washbourn owns the filly and Menuisier was full of praise for the passionate owner, whose racecourse celebrations have become a fan favourite in recent years.
"He's very enthusiastic but doesn't interfere. He's been a fantastic supporter of the yard from day one and has always put his money where his mouth is," said Menuisier. "A lot of people promise a lot, but he just makes it happen.
"Racing needs more people like him because the public like to see enthusiasm rather than always seeing the same people and silks passing the winning post first. Clive is very passionate, it's a real pleasure to deal with him."
Washbourn has had Group success with runners trained at Menuisier's West Sussex base, including with the popular Thundering Blue, a Group 2 winner.
"This one is the first horse he's bred too. Her dam was the first yearling I ever bought for Clive, so it's a really good story," added the trainer.
