Hamilton racecourse has been given the green light to start work on a 118-room hotel as part of a £10 million development at the Scottish course.

South Lanarkshire Council on Wednesday approved the plans, which officials at Hamilton say will double the number of people employed by the course with up to 20 new jobs.

Feasibility studies have also estimated that it has the potential to generate an additional £5.9 million per year in visitor expenditure in the area.

Construction is due to get under way in the spring, with further details and updates to come throughout 2018.

Vivien Currie, chief executive at Hamilton, said: "We welcome the decision to approve our plans for a landmark £10 million hotel at Hamilton Park racecourse.

"We are incredibly excited about this development and are delighted to have South Lanarkshire Council’s approval.

"This significant investment project will bring fantastic benefit to our business and the wider economy. We have already had extremely positive feedback from our customers, sponsors and the local community and can’t wait to get on the road to delivering this fantastic new facility."
