Could Irish Derby winner Sovereign run in the John Smith's Cup at York?
You seldom, if ever, see a Classic winner contesting a handicap on their next start but Saturday's Irish Derby winner Sovereign has the option of running in the John Smith's Diamond Jubilee Cup at York on Saturday week.
Sovereign was only number 44 on the list for the York event, but a 5lb penalty for his Curragh heroics could see him sneak in at the foot of the weights, and trainer Aidan O'Brien said no decision will be made about his next start until the middle of the week.
O'Brien said on Sunday evening: "Sovereign seems to be fine this morning, as do all of the horses who ran in the Derby. I know Sovereign is in there towards the foot of the weights at York but we haven't decided anything for any of them yet.
"There is the race in France [Grand Prix de Paris] and the King George to think about for them as well. We will see how the horses are in a few days and go from there. It will be a few days before any decisions are made."
Monarch Of Egypt chased home Siskin in the Railway Stakes on Saturday and is set to renew rivalry in the Phoenix Stakes.
"We were very happy with Monarch Of Egypt. He was just about ready to start back again and the plan is to head to the Phoenix with him," O'Brien said.
