Seven-day Galway festival not guaranteed and Plate and Hurdle could yet be lost

Galway racecourse manager Michael Moloney has warned that a seven-day festival is not guaranteed and cast doubt over whether the featured Tote.com Galway Plate and Guinness Galway Hurdle will take place this season.

The prospect of those flagship races - worth €300,000 each - getting the go-ahead will hinge on how soon National Hunt racing in Ireland resumes.

Horse Racing Ireland’s plans for a resumption once the government eases its Covid-19 lockdown restrictions include an initial four-week spell of Flat racing, and Moloney suggested the track “could be in bother” if jump racing does not resume by early July. The Galway festival is scheduled to begin on July 27.
