Already suffering from the effects of a prolonged shutdown, independent bookmakers fear yet more financial hardship when betting shops reopen, with the prospect of limited customers due to social distancing requirements.

Betting shops have been forced to shut due to the coronavirus outbreak and smaller firms, who do not operate online, are facing a daunting period without any income.

But the reopening of shops is especially worrying as government support will stop and regular outgoings – such as service fees and staff wages – return. Income will likely take a hit with customers having to social distance, which could include limited numbers in shops, while some punters may not wish to return over health concerns.
