Betfred ask landlords for rental holiday in response to sports cancellations

Betfred have written to landlords to tell them they require a rent "holiday" to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on its retail estate.

The gambling industry has been left reeling by the widespread postponement or cancellation of major sporting events such as the Premier League, with the suspension of British horseracing this week the latest blow to the sector.

As a result, Betfred group chief operating officer Mark Stebbings has written to landlords saying they have had "no option" but to put on hold all occupational costs including rents for their retail estate of more than 1,500 betting shops "for the next scheduled payment date".
