'Common sense prevailed' - Irish trainers' body pleased by new licence fee deal

Plans to increase trainers' licence fees by as much as 350 per cent in some cases have been shelved by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, which instead is imposing an 18 per cent rise on annual renewal costs.

The IHRB had proposed the biggest increase to €2,000 for trainers who had 301 runners or more in their previous year – the top tier in a six-level structure.

After branding the initial proposals "ludicrous" when the plans were revealed in November, Irish Racehorse Trainers Association chief executive Michael Grassick said on Friday he was satisfied with the new arrangement following negotiations with the IHRB.
