Greg Knight, managing director of independent bookmaker Jenningsbet, has hailed the reopening of betting shops in England next week as the government finally "seeing common sense".

Under new measures announced by UK prime minister Boris Johnson on Monday bookmakers can reopen from next week, even in areas with higher infection rates, falling in line with rules governing other non-essential retail premises.

All 5,681 betting shops in England, including 100 operated by Jenningsbet, have been closed since November 5, when the second coronavirus lockdown was introduced, but will reopen next Wednesday with new protocols in place for those falling within Tier 3 zones.
