Colliver unscathed from Wetherby fall and ponders appeal against ten-day ban

Joe Colliver: jockey who spent time in prison urges under-pressure young riders to seek help
Joe Colliver: left hospital on Saturday evening

It has been an eventful couple of days for jump jockey Joe Colliver. On Friday he was given a ten-day ban by stewards at Newcastle for not making sufficient effort on runner-up Katy Royal and on Saturday he missed two rides and ended the afternoon in York County Hospital after being unseated in a novice chase at Wetherby.

Colliver reported on Sunday: "I'm fine and Henry [Brooke] picked me up from hospital yesterday evening. I came off my horse Valgor Du Ronceroy and was trodden on so they sent me to hospital to be checked over."

The rider, who is attached to Micky Hammond's stable, is considering an appeal against his Newcastle ban. Colliver picked up the suspension after he was a strong-finishing second on the Chris Fairhurst-trained 3-1 shot Katy Royal in the mares' novice hurdle, in which the pair were beaten a head by Richard Johnson on Mary Eleanor.

The stewards considered that Colliver had not taken all reasonable measures from the third-last to obtain the best possible placing, in that he allowed the winner to get away from him without making sufficient effort until after the final flight, only to be beaten a diminishing head.

Colliver said: "I might appeal but I'm going to speak to Rory Mac Neice before I make any decision. She's not an easy mare and you cannot hit her with the stick, but I thought I was going to get there."
