Colin Keane, Hugo Palmer and John Dance look back at the Irish Derby festival
Owner Paul Jacobs and James Knight of Ladbrokes/Coral also join the panel
Fluke or not? Will shock Irish Derby winner Sovereign win another Group 1 this season?
John Dance, owner We had seen plenty of him before Saturday and he looked exposed enough. It’s hard to see him winning another one unless it is gifted to him again, but he’s a Galileo colt trained by a genius so you just never know. Connections have had the odd surprise Classic winner before and you’d imagine they’ll do their best to get another Group 1 with him.
Paul Jacobs, owner I’d be surprised if Sovereign ever won another Group 1. He had previously been employed by Coolmore as a pacemaker, and was given too much rope on Saturday. He could well emulate his stablemate Wings Of Eagles, who was a shock winner of the Derby in 2017 and had just one more (unsuccessful) race before being retired.
Colin Keane, jockey I don’t think you could call it a fluke, the reason being that I thought he quickened again when he turned for home. He looked like he was loving it. We might unfairly brand him a lucky winner, but I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see him win another Group 1.
