Cloudy Glen puts Red Trot Filly Peppers at the top of the Ten To Follow table
Cloudy Glen’s victory in Saturday’s Ladbrokes Trophy not only brought a huge smile to the face of trainer Venetia Williams and a moistening to the eye of those who fondly remember his late owner Trevor Hemmings, it was also enthusiastically celebrated by the handful of Tote Ten To Follow stables who included the far-from-prolific chaser in their teams.
Just 0.3 per cent of players had the foresight to include Cloudy Glen, who had been successful in only two of his 14 chasing assignments prior to picking up 87.3 points by landing this Ten To Follow bonus race.
This victory propelled Cloudy Glen to the top of the Ten To Follow scoring chart and produced a dramatic effect on the team leaderboard which is now headed by Red Trot Filly Peppers on 207.22 points. It is necessary to go down to Honey Appreciate The Dream in fifth place on 195.17 points to find a team that has not been boosted by Cloudy Glen.
Newcastle’s Fighting Fifth resulted in a dead-heat between Not So Sleepy and Epatante but the Hughie Morrison hurdler came out much better in Ten To Follow terms, yielding 40.9 points compared to the 27.1 picked up by the 2020 Champion Hurdle winner thanks to an enhanced Tote return. Unfortunately, only 0.1 per cent of players have Not So Sleepy in their teams compared to 6.5 per cent for Epatante.
That pales in comparison with the 78.5 per cent of stables who included the unbeaten 2021 Champion Hurdle winner Honeysuckle in their ten and were duly rewarded when she began her season with a 13th win under rules for 27.22 points.
In the staying hurdle division, Thomas Darby picked up 31.50 points in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury to put him in fourth place on the list of leading points scorers, while at Fairyhouse Beacon Edge was a Grade 1 winner in the Drinmore Chase. The 30.60 points earned there puts him on the heels of Thomas Darby in fifth place.
There were also notable wins for Ahoy Senor (23.50 points), Nassalam (23.0) and) Aye Right (20.20).
