Churchill's equine exploits brought to life in new book by Brough Scott

A new book recounting Sir Winston Churchill's love affair with the horse is published next week.

In Churchill At The Gallop, renowned broadcaster and Racing Post writer Brough Scott charts Sir Winston's life in horses: from his early days riding ponies at Belnheim Palace, through his military career in Sudan and South Africa, right up to his post-political life, when he took on the role of owners/breeder at Newchapel Stud near his home at Chartwell in Kent.

Scott weaves many letters and archive photos from Churchill's life into the narrative.

"In taking this 'view from the saddle' I got closer to Churchill than I ever imagined," said Scott. "I have found it fascinating and believe that readers will too."

Members of Churchill's family are among 80 invited guests to a launch at the Household Cavalry Museum on Thursday evening, while Churchill At The Gallop is published on October 13 and is available from www.racingpost.com/shop

Death of Tommy Barnes

Former trainer and jockey Tommy Barnes has died following a short illness. He was 87.

Barnes, father of Grand National-winning jockey Maurice, finished second in the 1962 race on board Wyndburgh. He also enjoyed success as an owner, with his colours carried to multiple victories by the smart jumper Beaucadeau.

The funeral will be held on Monday, October 9, 11am at Christ Church in Penrith.
