Veteran Newmarket trainer Chris Dwyer is to retire after 23 years as a licence holder next month, bringing an end to a career in which he has saddled nearly 400 winners.

Dwyer, a former jockey, turns 70 in December and will still keep his hand in by managing horses for his existing owners.

Dwyer, whose wife Shelley is agent for three-time champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa, first began training in 1990, although a few years' gap then followed until he resumed in 1995.
