Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer Henrietta Knight will sign copies of Starting From Scratch, her new book on jump jockeys, at the Wantage Literary Festival on Monday, October 28.

Knight, the Lockinge-based trainer of three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate, will be in discussion on the night with ex-jockey Luke Harvey, with the interview followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Starting From Scratch, in which Knight charts the early lives of some of the finest jockeys in the game in the hope of finding out what motivated them to take up riding from a young age, was published by Racing Post Books and is priced at £20.

The event, which kicks off at 8pm, will be held at The Beacon, Wantage. Tickets are priced at £10/£5 and can be purchased at www.ticketsource.co.uk/wantage-literary-festival

Henrietta Knight will also sign copies of Starting From Scratch on the Racing Post bookstall in the shopping village at Cheltenham on Friday and Saturday

Former paraplegic trainer, jockey and breeder Colin Jackson dies aged 71

Colin Jackson, who trained successfully as a paraplegic after his riding career was ended by a point-to-point fall at Andoversford in 1975, died suddenly aged 71 at home on Wednesday, writes Graham Dench.

Jackson, who was based at Cradley, near Malvern, had ridden 18 winners as an amateur before injury cut short his career and he was a long-term beneficiary of the Injured Jockeys Fund thereafter.

He enjoyed early success training from a wheelchair in the mid-1980s, notably with the useful handicap hurdler Tancred Walk and the diminutive Miss Nero, whom he bought in Ireland and saddled for three handicap wins in the mid-1980s before she was placed twice in the Stayers' Hurdle for Richard Lee.

His last winner under rules was Moonlighter in a hunter chase at Huntingdon in 2002, and he relinquished his licence after one more season.

Moonlighter raced in the colours of his daughter Sarah Jackson, who as an amateur in the 1998-99 season had won handicap hurdles for him on Whitebonnet at Newton Abbot and Exeter at odds of 20-1 and 40-1 respectively.

Jackson was also a breeder, and among the most successful horses he bred was the talented mare Amaretto Rose, a wide-margin winner of a Grade 2 novice hurdle at Haydock for Nicky Henderson before finishing third behind Ebaziyan in the 2007 Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham.

He also bred The Mick Weston, a smart bumper winner at Cheltenham and Chepstow for Richard Phillips and also successful over hurdles.

He is survived by his wife Ann and his daughter.
