Chapple-Hyam star shows first shades of Derby brilliance

The market seems to know who will win this end of season highlight with seven of the last ten winners of the Racing Post Trophy sent off the favourite. But Peter Chapple-Hyam has a recipe for upsetting the apple cart with Authorized in 2006 and Marcel last year winning at 25-1 and 33-1 respectively.

It is Authorized who Chapple-Hyam regards the most talented. "He was the best, certainly," he said. "Going in I was quite confident. He ran well at Newbury on his first start but he worked nicely in the days leading up to the race and I said to Frankie [Dettori] 'I'm going to go for the Racing Post Trophy' and he laughed to begin with but then said 'why not'."

Third on his debut, Authorized returned to Newbury - the adopted home for that year's Trophy - where the market valued proven form as Aidan O'Brien's Eagle Mountain was sent off the 8-11 favourite after staying on strongly into second in the Champagne Stakes at York then routing the Beresford by seven lengths. But Chapple-Hyam trusted homework and his gut and Authorized did not disappoint as he danced through the field and heavy ground, showing the preliminary shades of his devastating Derby display in June the following year.
