The Flat trainers’ championship should be decided on Champions Day at Ascot rather than at the end of the calendar year, the sport's promotional arm said on Monday.

The title race between Charlie Appleby and William Haggas is going down to the wire and, with just £80,629 splitting the pair, Saturday's British Champions Day at Ascot should prove decisive.

Both trainers will have a number of runners at the meeting and the rivalry is set to come to a head when the unbeaten Baaeed takes on Godolphin's Adayar in the Group 1 Qipco Champion Stakes (4.00).
