Champion jockey Johnson faces concussion test and misses Welsh National card

Richard Johnson will need to pass a concussion test before returning to race-riding after what started as a sweet day in West Yorkshire turned sour.

The champion jockey on Tuesday night admitted defeat in getting the all-clear in time to ride on Wednesday at Chepstow – where his mounts included leading Coral Welsh Grand National contender Rock The Kasbah – should the track pass a morning inspection.

Johnson, normally in action at Kempton on Boxing Day, said it had been "a long time" since he had ridden at Wetherby on this particular day, but initially he was glad he came after a double on favourites Petticoat Tails and Dalaman in the 2m3½f mares' novice hurdle and 2m3½f handicap hurdle.

'Fingers crossed I'll be back soon'

However, he suffered a change in fortunes after banging his head following an unseat on Grey Gold in the 2m3½f handicap chase, after which he was signed off for the rest of the day.

"I feel fine in myself and just need to get a concussion test done so I can ride again," said Johnson, who is 18 winners clear of second-placed Harry Skelton in the Stobart jockeys' championship.

"I'm not going to be able to do that tomorrow so I'll miss the Welsh National, if it's on, which is frustrating, but I understand the reasons behind it.

"I'll be trying to get the test booked as soon as possible, hopefully within the next couple of days, and fingers crossed I'll be back very soon."
