Cartmel staged its annual and unique 'blessing of the racehorse' event on Sunday, a popular tradition in the Cumbrian village.

The ceremony, held outside the 800-year-old Cartmel Priory, saw Think Ahead, trained by James Moffatt, blessed by vicar The Rev Nick Devenish in front of locals who toasted with a complimentary glass of Prosecco.

The event is sandwiched between Cartmel's August bank holiday meeting, which takes place on Saturday and Monday. The season at Cartmel comes to an end on Monday with a seven-race card starting at 2.05.

Geraldine McKay, Cartmel racecourse manager, said: “Horseracing is entwined deep into the history of Cartmel, so it is fitting that this unusual but lovely service continues to be held in the village year after year.

"The ceremony takes place between our final two days of racing at the course for 2019, which makes the day ultra special.

"There’s always a good turnout at the service which, as far as we know, is unique. It makes the whole weekend a particularly special occasion and the perfect way to celebrate another excellent season of racing at the course."
