Buick to miss Epsom following careless riding ban at York
William Buick was ruled out of both days of the Investec Derby meeting on Friday night after he collected a five day riding ban at York.
The Godolphin jockey was found guilty of careless riding after guiding the Charlie Appleby-trained Alqamar to victory in the last race.
Alqamar won by five lengths but in drifting across to the stands rail 2f out he caused interference to Brimham Rock who in turn hampered Taxmeifyoucan.
The stewards ruled that Buick had been slow to correct his mount and that Taxmeifyoucan was the victim of considerable interference as a result. The ban covers June 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7.
As the punishment is greater than four days Buick will not be allowed to move any of the days which correspond with Group 1 races, an option which only applies to suspensions of four days or less.
He would have to successfully appeal the decision or severity of the sentence to be free to ride at Epsom.
As Godolphin rider, Buick would be likely to be involved in all three Group 1 races and would have been expected to partner Jack Hobbs in the Coronation Cup.
Alqamar is one of numerous Godolphin entries in the Derby but Buick's most likely mount would have been Bay Of Poets, runner-up to Cliffs Of Moher in the Dee Stakes, if he is supplemented.
