It was a day of landmarks on Sunday as Sam Twiston-Davies and Aidan Coleman, friends and weighing room colleagues, rode their 1,000th jumps winners in Britain and Ireland.

The pair became the eighth and ninth current jockeys to reach the milestone when scoring on the same card at Southwell.

The duo then added another winner each to finish a memorable day on 1,001 jumps winners.

Coleman, who has also had five winners on the Flat, struck first when Western Miller made all to win the 2m4½f handicap chase.

He then partnered The Vollan to victory in the 1m7½f handicap hurdle, moving him to 1,001 career jumps winners – seven short of the next-best on the list, Graham Lee (1,008).

Twiston-Davies brought up the milestone when the Richard Newland-trained Nordican Bleue was an easy four-and-a-half length winner of the mares' novice hurdle.

The victory was the first leg of a quickfire double for Twiston-Davies, who followed up with Chef De Troupe in the concluding 1m7½f handicap hurdle.

The jockey has now ridden 999 jumps winners in Britain and a further two in Ireland. He has had one Flat winner.

Twiston-Davies said: "It seems only yesterday that I was playing starters orders with Willy! It's a great a achievement and I feel really lucky to have hit the landmark.

"I've been spoiled with lots and lots of great winners over the years. Hello Bud's second Becher Chase was a very special day. To win any race for your family is special but do it in a big one is little different. To not mention The New One would be mad – he did so much for me and my career as a racehorse."

The son of trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies was stable jockey to Paul Nicholls for four seasons until going freelance last season, and added: "It may sound a bit cheesy but my mum has played such a huge role in my career. She's been a great support and I'm very lucky to have such a great support team.

"You really can't go wrong when you ride for the likes of dad, Richard Newland, Paul Nicholls and Neil Mulholland."

He rode Dodging Bullets to win the Tingle Creek and Champion Chase for Nicholls in the 2014-15 season, which proved a career-best campaign with 145 winners and nearly £2.5 million in prize-money.

Twiston-Davies, who was champion conditional in 2010-11, has ridden a century of winners in each of the last six seasons.

As well as Dodging Bullets, he struck up a brilliant association with The New One, who was trained by his father until being retired last December. He partnered the popular hurdler to 18 victories, including in the 2013 Neptune Novices' Hurdle and the 2014 Aintree Hurdle.

Twiston-Davies also had back-to-back wins in the Scottish Grand National on Vicente and has registered seven victories at the Cheltenham Festival.

Paisley Park's victory in the JLT Hurdle at Ascot broke Coleman's Grade 1 duck in December, before the mighty Emma Lavelle-trained seven-year-old provided the jockey with his career highlight at Cheltenham in March.

Coleman said: "When you start riding you'd be happy just riding out your claim, so this is fantastic. It’s only a personal milestone, but it’s really nice to have.

"Me and Sam got a picture together on the podium at Southwell and it’s lovely to share the moment with a great friend.

"We might organise a giant party soon. We obviously haven't made very much money so we're on the lookout for someone to sponsor it for us!"

Coleman, who rode his first winner at Uttoxeter in October 2008, owes much of his success to trainer Venetia Williams, for whom he has ridden 334 winners including when partnering Houblon Des Obeaux to victory in the Grade 2 Denman Chase at Newbury in 2016.

The pair sat tenth and 11th on the list until the retirements of Ruby Walsh and Noel Fehily last season and now trail only Richard Johnson, Barry Geraghty, Davy Russell, Tom Scudamore, Paddy Brennan, Brian Hughes and Graham Lee.
