The highs and lows of an outstanding career witnessed at Sandown
The year was 1928, and Fairway set a record that stands today
The year 1928 - Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin, Herbert Hoover is elected US president, Lady Chatterley's Lover and Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man are published, Paavo Nurmi wins his ninth Olympic gold medal in Amsterdam, and Don Bradman makes his Test match debut.
The horses Fairway was Britain's greatest champion of the 1920s. Pharos's brother was the top two-year-old of 1927 and was favourite for the 1928 Derby, but had his chance ruined by being mobbed by fans before the start. The people Fairway's four seasons in training coincided with Frank Butters' spell as trainer to the colt's owner-breeder, Lord Derby, and the Eclipse prize-money contributed to the second of his eight titles. The colt was ridden in all his races by former champion jockey Tommy Weston. Royal Minstrel was an early champion for Cecil Boyd-Rochfort, who went on to claim five trainers' titles, and was ridden by 15-time Classic-winning jockey Joe Childs.
