NHS could be the big winner as Virtual Grand National is a hit with punters
Bookmakers reported lively turnover on the Virtual Grand National as punters grabbed the chance to have an Aintree bet – and raise money for a good cause.
Layers will donate any profits to the NHS Charities COVID-19 Urgent Appeal and David Stevens of Coral said: "The Virtual Grand National proved to be a really popular replacement for the real thing.
"An average stake of just over £2 per bet showed it hit the spot in terms of providing a fun opportunity for people to have their annual National flutter, as well as some light relief at this unique time, while most importantly also helping to raise money for the fantastic NHS."

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said during the day: "We are thrilled that the race is proving really popular and people are having fun with it, which is what it's all about in aid of a wonderful cause, with the average stake being £2."
The total raised for the NHS will not be known until profits are calculated but the winner Potters Corner was not among the leading choices of punters with Ladbrokes, who reported that Tiger Roll, Definitly Red and Burrows Saint were the most popular selections.
NHS charities will also benefit from commentator Stewart Machin's auctioning his colour chart for the race – presenter Nick Luck set the ball rolling by bidding £500.
Programme-makers Carm Productions were pleased with the broadcast and said: "What an incredible few days it has been. We first aired the Virtual Grand National in 2017, and we feel honoured that it has been able to stand in for the Grand National at this difficult time.
"Let's hope it has entertained racegoers and the wider public. We also hope that it has been able to help raise funds to support the NHS at this important time. We would also like to thank ITV and The Jockey Club for their ongoing help and support."
