Alan King, one of the best-known and most successful trainers over jumps, has also made it pay on the Flat this summer, and Jonjo O’Neill has revealed he too will be looking for more winners on the Flat in the future.

Among a big team of youngsters at Jackdaws Castle are some well-bred store horses but also some bred for the Flat, and O’Neill is hoping they can cut their teeth in that discipline before running over jumps.

“We’re buying a few more Flat ones and I think it’s the way forward,” said the trainer. “You can run them on the Flat as two-year-olds if they’re strong enough to take it and then go over hurdles.
