'He was meant for greatness' - US legend Mike Smith hails retiring Dettori

Frankie Dettori's decision to end his exceptional career at the Breeders' Cup next year will add extra dash to an already great event, according to the meeting's winningmost jockey Mike Smith, who hailed the retiring rider as one of the best of all time.

Dettori announced on Saturday his spellbinding time in the saddle will end in 2023 and a sign-off date at the Breeders' Cup, which takes place at Santa Anita in November. He won a memorable running of the Classic at the course aboard Raven's Pass in 2008.

Only a handful of jockeys have partnered more winners at the fixture than Dettori, but not one has more than the 27 registered by Smith.
