William Buick found a more acceptable use for his index finger at Sandown yesterday when he pointed to the sky to celebrate "the most timely winner I've ever had".

The day before the Godolphin rider began a 30-day riding suspension, he delivered the kind of victory that can only help his part self-inflicted absence pass by tolerably by steering Hawkbill to a breakthrough success for trainer Charlie Appleby in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes.

From today, the 27-year-old's riding responsibilities for Godolphin will be shared between James Doyle, James McDonald and others during a peak summer period that includes next week's July festival at Newmarket, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and then Glorious Goodwood.
