Brassil set for spell on sidelines after 'nasty' leg break

It's been a year to forget in terms of injury for conditional jockey Conor Brassil, who looks likely to be absent until the new year after breaking his tibia at Fairyhouse on Tuesday.

Partnering Christy Roche's Demi Plie in the concluding handicap hurdle on the card, Brassil's mount fell at the third flight and left him with damage to his leg.

Turf Club Chief Medical Officer Dr Adrian McGoldrick confirmed on Wednesday: "Conor has a nasty spiral fracture of his tibia."

"He's going to theatre to be operated on this afternoon. It's looks like he'll be out for three months," he added.

This injury comes towards the end of a season which saw the young five-pound claimer fracture ribs and puncture a lung at Fairyhouse on New Year's Day, damaging futher ribs at Tramore in early June before fracturing his T3 and T5 vertebrae in a fall at Galway at the beginning of August. That incident kept him out of action until October.

The Dunmurray native, whose father Martin famously trained Numbersixvalverde to win the Grand National in 2006, had ridden four winners this season, taking him to 23 victories over the past seven seasons.

McGoldrick also provided an update on Jonathan Moore, who took a heavy fall in the Cork Grand National last Sunday, and Mark Walsh, who came to grief at Down Royal the previous day.

He said: "Jonathan is due to visit Mr Kennedy at noon with a view to being cleared to ride. He's much improved compared to earlier this week.

"Mark Walsh is having an MRI done today on his shoulder."
