Bookmakers upset as new ratio limits their numbers when crowds return

Beleaguered on-course bookmakers were dealt a fresh blow on Friday with news their numbers will be capped once spectators return next week.

At all Jockey Club and Arena Racing-owned tracks, a ratio of one bookmaker to 150 members of the public will apply from Wednesday at the courses which will be allowed to open to the public.

Under the British government's tiered system which will come into effect once the England-wide lockdown ends on Tuesday, up to 2,000 spectators are permitted to attend meetings in Tier 2, with 35 of the 51 racecourses in England in Tier 2 zones.
