Online gambling companies are facing an investigation by the competition authorities into whether they have potentially broken consumer law in the way they treat some customers.

And in further bad news for the industry, the government's long-awaited announcement of a wide-ranging review of gambling issues including gaming machines – also known as FOBTs – and advertising is expected imminently.

Working with the Gambling Commission and others, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has contacted a range of operators to demand information about their use of potentially unfair terms and conditions and misleading practices.
