Bolger and Russell ready for Hurling For Cancer showdown

As the countdown to the All Ireland Hurling decider continues, one of the most anticipated clashes of the GAA calendar will be fought out on Tuesday evening as Hurling For Cancer takes centre stage at St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge.

The clash of the ash in aid of the Irish Cancer Society is the brainchild of Jim Bolger and Davy Russell, with both compiling teams featuring household names from the world of GAA and horseracing.

"We've raised more than €540,000 so far and this is our sixth year," said Bolger. "There are a total of 63 All Ireland medals and 66 All Star awards gracing the field – some extremely talented players on show."

Bolger’s side is managed by Liam Griffin and assisted by Davy Fitzgerald, while Kilkenny’s Brian Cody skippers two-time champion jockey Russell's team.

Ireland soccer stars Niall Quinn and Stephen Hunt will be among those lining up, as will Kilkenny senior hurler Richie Hogan, former Tyrone footballer Peter Canavan and jump jockeys Derek O'Connor and Mikey Fogarty.

Bolger added: "The goodwill of people has been great, with some outstanding players on the field, and it's a very classy turnout for a great cause."

On an aspect of the game that could mirror Waterford's Maurice Shanahan's frequent emergence from the sidelines to great effect, Bolger said: "Joe Brolly is named on the bench but will be tactically important to bring on as a major-impact substitution."

Throw-in with boxer Bernard Dunne is at 6.30pm and tickets are available on the gate.
