Big week for racing: BHA chair pledges 'unrivalled' welfare strategy on Thursday

British racing's five-year strategy for the welfare of racehorses, which is set to be published on Thursday, will include a programme of work "unrivalled in our history", the sport was told on Tuesday.

BHA chair Annamarie Phelps told a conference organised by the University of Liverpool in partnership with the Racing Foundation that some people in the sport might feel the strategy goes too far.

However, she added: "What we really need to do is get ahead of public opinion, we need to be in control and want to be driving the way we run our sport. This week is a big week for racing."
